Begin your prayer time by lighting a candle or by ringing the opening bell in the right hand column at the website here. Allow the ringing of the bell to draw you into sacred space with God. Take a few deep breaths, breathing in God's love and presence, breathing out any distractions or worries.
Lord, Jesus Christ, teach me to pray.
Prepare yourself for the reading of the gospel by quieting yourself and asking God to speak to you in this passage. Read the passage slowly with both the mind and the heart, at least two times.
A reading from the Gospel according to John [1:43-46]
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Phillip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Both the scripture passage from today and the one from yesterday end with the same three words. Come and see. Yesterday these words were an invitation from Jesus. Today they are an invitation from Philip to Nathanael. Imagine that God is saying to you, Come and see. Hear those words in your heart.
Take a moment in prayer to ask God what God may be inviting you to during this Lenten journey. What does God want you to see? Is God calling you to some new place in your life? Might God be inviting you to go deeper in some area, perhaps prayer, discipleship or service?
Or might God be asking you to release or let go of something in your life that is no longer helpful or has become burdensome to you? Does God want you to “see” some part of your life that needs to be changed or transformed?
If you don’t know the answers to any of these questions, be sure to ask God. If you do know what the invitation might be, what is your response to God?
I encourage you to make some notes about your prayer time in your prayer journal.
Loving Jesus, Open my eyes. Help me to say yes to your invitations. Help me to truly see.
