Prepare for your prayer time by lighting a candle or by ringing the opening bell in the right hand column at the website here. Allow the ringing of the bell to draw you into sacred space with God.
Lord Jesus Christ, teach me to pray.
Prepare yourself for the reading of the scripture passage by quieting yourself and asking God to speak to you in this passage. Read the passage slowly with both the mind and the heart, at least two times.
A reading from the Gospel according to John [1:29]
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
The passage is purposely very short today. Reread the passage slowly several times allowing the words to sink down into your mind and heart.
The John who is speaking in this passage is John the Baptist. What do you think John meant when he called Jesus by the title, “Lamb of God”? What images do you associate with that name for Jesus?
I would like to invite you to use your imagination to try to put yourself in John’s position. Imagine that you are standing on a dusty road in Palestine, 2000 years ago. You look up and see Jesus walking toward you. This is a man that you have known since your childhood, he is your second cousin, he is familiar to you. But today, as you look at him, something is different. This image of the "Lamb of God” comes up in you. What feelings arise? What hopes do you place in this man? What does it mean to take away the sins of the world? What does it mean for him to take away your own sins?
Take a moment in prayer to tell Jesus what your hopes are for this season of Lent. What are your hopes for yourself? For your community? For your world?
What do you think God, through Jesus Christ, is doing in the world right now? Do you see his actions? How is Jesus Christ acting in and through you?
Record your thoughts, insights or prayers in your prayer journal.
Jesus, as I walk through these 40 days of Lent, help me to keep my eyes on you. Change my heart. Teach me to be like you.
